Turkey Still in the Race to Defend the Title

The semifinalists of the 35th World 3-Cushion Team Championship in Viersen have been determined. On tomorrow’s Sunday, defending champion Turkey will meet the Netherlands at 10:00 am, while Spain and Sweden will determine the second finalist at 12:30 pm. The final is then scheduled for 04:00 pm.
A thrilling quarterfinal match developed between Turkey and the Greeks, who narrowly made it into the knockout round. After wins by Tayfun Tasdemir on one side and Nikos Polychronopoulos on the other, the match finally went into the deciding scotch-double. In this match, the Turks had the better end for themselves and can therefore continue to dream of defending their world championship title.
They will meet the Netherlands in the semifinals, who also only won against South Korea in the scotch double. Dick Jaspers had previously lost the singles match on the Dutch side, but his partner Jean Paul de Bruijn made up for this defeat. The doubles then ended 15:12, also very close in favour of Oranje.
The other two quarterfinals were clearer affairs. Although Ruben Legazpi drew for the Spaniards in his singles match against Vietnam, Daniel Sanchez brought his match home and thus ensured the final score of 3:1.
Meanwhile Sweden beat Mexico 4:0. Torbjörn Blomdahl had no problems to defeat Christian Hernandez in eleven innings, while Michael Nilsson had some more problems against Javier Vera, but in the end he won 40:27.
For the hosts from Germany the tournament ended in the group stage after a dramatic defeat against South Korea. After Cengiz Karaca had lost his match 31:40, Jik Haeng Kim recovered a 16:32 and a 36:39 deficit for his team and finished the match with the necessary four points.
